Police injured in Peruvian firework crackdown

world news

| |

In a street market in the Peruvian town of Chiclayo police moved in. Their intent was to confiscate illegal fireworks on sale ahead of the New Year’s celebrations. The street sellers were in angry mood and the police unprepared for what happened next.

With no warning a rocket known as a Napoleon with a form of shrapnel inside exploded.

The contents of the pyrotechnic peppered the flesh of seven of the policemen. Locals report they heard a market stall holder shout,“is this what you want”, just before the explosion.

In the local hospital the full extent of the injuries became apparent. Earlier in the day the authorities had seized nearly a ton of illegal fireworks in their crackdown to avoid just such an incident during the country’s New Year festivities.
