A return to normal is being promised over the next two days after power cuts caused by wintry weather closed Moscow’s main airport for hours.

The situation has improved since Sunday’s shutdown at Domodedovo airport but passengers were still experiencing major disruption on Monday.

Other airports in the Russian capital have been affected too and tempers have frayed as travel plans were thrown into disarray.

Freezing rain, ice and heavy snow hit power lines, triggering the outages, which also affected tens of thousands of homes in the Moscow region.

On the streets, tramway and trolleybus services were severely disrupted by the extreme conditions.

And as city authorities battled to clear the roads, pedestrians have been struggling in ice rink conditions.
