Blizzards hit northeastern US

“We did pray for a White Christmas, but it didn’t have to be a strong blizzard.”

That was the reaction of one New York resident as snow storms hit the northeastern United States.

Air, rail and road transport have been disrupted and snow falls of up to 75 centimetres have been reported in some places.

People attempting to fly after the busy Christmas weekend have needed big doses of patience.

One woman said: “Well, our son Lucas was home from Virginia Tech. and his Christmas gift was a trip to Munich where we used to live and he wanted to show his girlfriend where he had lived and spent much of his youth. So we gave him a ticket to Munich, got to the airport and since they are going through Philadelphia, the flight’s been cancelled. And, he’s really disappointed.”

A man said: “It’s been disappointing now that I’m here at the airport and I see that my flight to Detroit has been cancelled. I may try to reschedule. It looks like Delta is going there.”

The National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings from Maine to New Jersey, with storm warnings for nearly the entire East Coast.

Half a dozen states have declared a state of emergency.
