world news

Moscow’s largest airport has been brought to a standstill by icy rain.

Domodedovo shut down after the power supply failed. No planes are landing or taking off, and it is not clear when the situation will improve.

For pedestrians, it is treacherous underfoot. Clearing is underway but there is a lot to do.

The bad weather arrived on Saturday evening. Work is underway to restore power lines after they iced up and snapped.

An estimated 200,000 people in the Russian capital have been left without power. The city’s 14 hospitals are running on emergency generators.

They are used to extreme winter weather in Moscow, but this time they have been outwitted.

Motorists woke to find their cars and the roads covered with up to two centimetres of ice.
