Rome police search all embassies after blasts

Italian police have been checking all embassies in Rome after two separate explosions at the Swiss and Chilean missions. Each blast caused an injury.

The first blast at the Swiss embassy caused serious hand wounds to an employee in the post room. The man, a Swiss national, is being treated in hospital.

The second explosion at the Chilean embassy happened in the early afternoon. The victim, also a post room employee, was injured in the hands and face after opening the package.

A third suspect parcel was investigated at the Ukrainian embassy but no dangerous items were found.

Rome’s mayor called the attacks a “wave of terrorism”. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the government confirmed that early inquiries were centred on far-left anarchist groups.

Earlier this week a device was found on an empty underground train in Rome. But it lacked a detonator and contained no explosive.

It is not known whether there is any connection with Thursday’s embassy parcel bombs.
