High-ranking officials from Europe and the United States have brought their backing to the Iranian opposition group the People’s Mujahiden at a conference in Paris.

The controversial group was removed from the European Union’s list of terrorist organisations last year.

Maryam Rajavi, the leader of the organisation’s political wing, wants Washington to do the same.

She is backed by former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani:

“For your organisation to be described as a terrorist organisation is simply a disgrace,” Giuliani said at the Paris conference.

Originally devoted to armed struggle against the Shah of Iran, the group fell out with the mullahs after the Revolution and took refuge in Iraq, where they joined forces with Saddam Hussein.

Three decades later, some 3,500 people still live in exile in Camp Ashraf north of Baghdad where they claim to be the target of attacks by Iraqi troops, whom they say now want them out of the country.
