North Korea has warned of a holy war against the South saying it is ready to use its nuclear weapons if needed.

The threat follows a massive display of force by the South, which has vowed to counterstrike any attack.

It is not the first time Pyongyang has threatened to destroy the South, though analysts say it doesn’t have the means to launch a nuclear device.

The belligerent rhetoric between both sides comes a month after a deadly strike by the North on a southern island.

Criticised for not reacting strongly enough at the time, South Korean leader Lee Myung-bak is now making up for lost time, and even made a rare trip to the front-line base during Thursday’s war games.

The drills involved a much larger scale of firepower and personnel than usual.

Analysts believe that, for now, the North is unlikely to launch a further attack on the South and will wait and see if its recent offer to readmit nuclear inspectors will lead to a resumption of talks on its nuclear programme.
