Thailand lifts Bangkok state of emergency

The Thai government has lifted a state of emergency that’s been in place in the capital Bangkok for the past eight months.

It comes as anti-government “red shirt” demonstrators have been increasingly defying the restrictions to stage rallies like this one on Sunday.

Thousands have gathered to remember those killed, detained or who are on the run. The government says the protests have become more peaceful.

The emergency measures were extended to more than a quarter of the country at one stage but have been gradually lifted.

The relaxation follows the first meeting between the prime minister and the acting red shirt leader.

More than 90 people died and 1800 were injured during a wave of anti-government protests that saw Thailand’s worst political violence in decades. The movement which exposed deep divisions in Thai society was finally put down by the military.

Several hundred protest leaders and supporters have remained in detention.

Despite the relaxation the authorities retain powers to curb protests.
