Iraq finally votes on new government

Voting is underway in Iraq to form a new government — nine months after an inconclusive election lead to political deadlock.

The 42 members of the cabinet will be decided upon after the vote was postponed on Monday following factional disputes.

Nuri al-Maliki is set to continue as Prime Minister despite his opponent Iyad Allawi’s coalition winning more seats in March’s election.

Allawi failed to gather enough support to secure the premiership.

It is hoped his decision to stand aside will calm fears of renewed sectarian violence in Iraq.

One government employee, Sadiq Awad, called for unity:

“I hope that all new leaders and all new ministers who form the new government work for the interest of the nation and give up the current sectarianism.’‘

Attacks on police and civilians have continued during the parliamentary negotiations.

13 were injured in roadside bombings in Baghdad on Monday.

Iraqis now hope the new government will work together to unite the country and advance the rebuilding of its fractured infrastructure.
