Sony warns on LCD TV sales

Sony says its sales of LCD TVs will likely come in slightly below its target this financial year through to April – which was for a 60 percent rise.

Sony Executive Deputy President Hiroshi Yoshioka says new 3D TVs will not resuscitate the soft sales in markets that are more mature and therefore saturated.

As a result Sony will struggle to make its TV division profitable this year.

It also does not expect substantial profits from the operations in the next financial year.

Television sales in Japan, which ballooned this year with a government stimulus plan and the digitisation of terrestrial broadcasting, are expected to tumble from December, while an uncertain job market is weighing on US shoppers’ appetite for big-ticket items.
