The Taliban have staged separate but simultaneous attacks on Afghanistan’s fledgling army.

Insurgents wearing bomb vests stormed a military recruitment centre in the northern city of Kunduz, sparking a gun battle.

Afghan and foreign troops surrounded the building where dozens of people were trapped inside.

Five Afghan soldiers and three police officers were killed along with at least three of the attackers.

The attacks took place in different parts of the country but at a time when both sites would be busy.

Recruits were arriving for morning training when they were targeted.

In Kabul, insurgents opened fire on a bus taking trainee officers to Afghanistan’s largest military base.

One attacker was shot dead by police but the second detonated his bomb vest, killing five people on the bus.

The Taliban says it was behind both attacks.
