Looking for a new job, but finding the going tough in these hard economic times? Well maybe you should think outside the box and become a monk.

It’s certainly an industry on its knees. So much so one Swiss order placed an ad in a newspaper last month looking for potential candidates. Declared a success, five out of 20 prospective brothers were deemed suitable.

With the Swiss friars becoming such a rare breed, they’re even offering temporary contracts, just in case you’re not sure about your calling.

‘‘It’s a lifetime attachment and it’s difficult. That’s why we’ve created a new possibility to become a so called temporary Capuchin friar, to be attached only for three years.’‘

It goes without saying the ideal candidates should be unmarried, male and Roman Catholic. Obvious benefits include spirituality, prayer and contemplation.

But, before you rush to alter your plans, remember its unpaid. Nobody said gods work was easy.
