Thousands of Christmas travellers remain stranded as severe weather hits airports, roads and the rail network in the UK.

Heathrow is expected to open again later today, but passengers are warned to check before setting off as a backlog of flights means the terminals are crowded.

Gatwick has re-opened, but many flights remain cancelled as airports in Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands have also been disrupted by heavy snow.

Forecasters say more of the white stuff is on the way.

At Europe’s third largest airport, Frankfurt, angry passengers threatened violence as tempers flared after days of disruption.

Police had to be called in to calm things down.

Airport authorities have been providing the stranded with food and drink, and camp beds have been set up as thousands face a weather ravaged yuletide.
