Gay service people celebrate as don’t ask, don’t tell” was voted off the books claiming it as a historic victory for civil rights.

Retired US navy commander Zoe Dunning endured two military discharge hearings after announcing she was gay:
“I’m so happy to be with you guys here today. So happy to be present for this day that I have always dreamed of. And we will continue the fight until every gay and lesbian service member can serve without fear. We are going to stick with it through implementation. We’re going to make sure the Pentagon implements this in a fair and just way and that they do it as soon as possible because we don’t need any more lives destroyed. We don’t need any more careers ended.”

The measure now goes back to the president to be signed into law:
Joe Lieberman the US Senator for Connecticut, was pleased with the vote.

“I just feel great about it, it was the right thing to do for our military, it was the right thing to do for our country and I just stress again that, perhaps, as we enter the holidays now, it’s also the best thing we could do to say to the American people that we are still able to come together in a bi-partisan way to right a wrong.”
