Belarus leader set to romp to victory

Belarus is voting in a presidential election almost certain to see incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko returned to power.

Often referred to as ‘‘Europe’s last dictator’‘ Lukashenko has played down planned opposition protests as he seeks to extend his 16 years in power with a fourth term.

In all nine challengers are up against Lukashenko, including Andrei Sannikov. He is thought to have little chance of winning but earlier declared he was voting for a ‘free Belarus’.

The opposition, which claims the presidential ballot is heavily rigged, say they plan to hold a rally in the capital Minsk after polls close.

Responding to questions about the planned protest, Sannikov said it would take place but gave no further details. Authorities have warned they will crack down on any attempts to whip up tension.

In a ballot which offers voters a free Christmas gift Christmas for casting their vote, international observers consider Belarus to have never held a free and fair election.
