A successful launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The three crew members, one American, one Russian and an Italian will take two days to catch up and dock with the orbital space station.

The trio will have a busy six months- taking deliveries from several unmanned cargo craft and conducting a series of educational projects.

The crew will still be on the ISS in April when they will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s flight which was the first human mission into space back in 1961.

This flight is one of the last before the United States retires its Discovery shuttles, leaving astronauts completely dependent on Russian craft for missions to space.
