Novartis Alcon deal completed

Novartis has completed its long-awaited buyout of the remainder of the US eyecare group Alcon that it did not already own.

The Swiss drugmaker is paying the equivalent of 9.6 billion euros.

Its original all-share offer at the start of this year was rejected by Alcon and has now been sweetened with a cash element added.

Alcon is known for its contact lens solutions, and the dominant player in the multibillion-dollar market of intraocular lenses, small lenses implanted in the eye to correct problems focusing.

Novartis also said it was restarting a 7.8 billion euro share buyback programme to minimise dilution to Novartis shareholders.
