Czech police and firefighters protest pay cuts

world news

| |

Czech police and firefighters have staged a small but noisy demonstration outside parliament in Prague, protesting against cuts in wages.

As static demonstrations in front of the parliament building are banned, they braved the snow and walked in a circle through the streets.

The demo came as MPs began a budget debate inside parliament. Ten percent cuts in public sector wages are among the measures proposed by the government to slash the country’s deficit from 5.1 per cent to 4.6 percent.

One firefighter said they expect to earn about 180 euros less a month, and they are worried about the effect this will have on recruitment in the fire and police services.
