Cold snap continues to bite in eastern Europe In Canada, army helicopters have been brought in to rescue motorists, some of whom have been stranded for more than 24 hours in the snow.
Police estimate around 300 were caught by the sudden winter blizzard on a 30 kilometre stretch of road in Ontario.
The storm blew in as many made their way to work on the border with the United States.
Temperatures overnight dropped to around -20. Police are patrolling on snowmobiles and in four-by-fours, and local farmers are using their tractors to pull vehicles out of drifts.
