Iran’s president sacks foreign minister

world news

Iran’s foreign minister has been sacked by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

No reason has been given for the decision, which was announced on Iranian state television.

The news of Manouchehr Mottaki’s dismissal came as he was on a visit to Senegal. The career diplomat recently re-started international talks on Iran’s nuclear programme and had been foreign minister since August 2005.

In a letter by Ahmadinejad to Mottaki, he thanked him for his diligence and wished him well in continuing to serve the Islamic Republic.

He is expected to be replaced in a caretaker capacity by Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation.
