Swedish authorities have confirmed the twin blasts in central Stockholm were the result of a terrorist attack.

One of the explosions killed the suspected bomber and wounded two other people.

The blasts came 10 minutes after Swedish news agency TT received a message threatening destruction in both Swedish and Arabic.

Security officer Anders Thornberg addressed the threat in a news briefing:

“The message came from a man who was not satisfied with the developments in Sweden regarding our military troops in other countries (Afghanistan), and he protested about bad things being said about the Prophet and so on (Mohammed cartoons).”

It began when a car burst into flames, which sparked explosions from within the vehicle.

A second explosion happened 300 metres from the first, blowing up the alleged terrorist.

Reports suggest the dead man was carrying a rucksack full of nails and explosive material.

Police cordoned off the area popular with shoppers.

Foreign Secretary Carl Bildt said the bomb attack could have been “truly catastrophic.”
