Speculation surrounds Swedish explosions

A day after what Swedish police now say were “terrorist attacks”, the realisation in Stockholm is that they could have been so much worse.

Singe marks are all that is left after the double blasts on a busy shopping street early yesterday evening.

One man died and two others were injured.

Swedish newspapers have speculated that the man blew himself up.

Some have also suggested Sweden’s military presence in Afghanistan could be a reason.

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeld played down the speculation. “This is being treated as a terrorist crime under Swedish law,” he said. “Speculation can create tension that might be hard to dispel so there will be no further comment until the situation is completely clear.”

Amateur video taken at the scene shows just how busy the streets were when the explosions happened.

A Swedish news agency says it received a threatening email just before the attacks.

As well as Afghanistan, it referred to caricatures from 2007 by the artist Lars Vilks, showing the Prophet Mohammed as a dog.

Muslims consider any depiction of the founder of Islam offensive.
