South Korea is on high alert amid fresh reports of military activity by the North.

Pyongyang has fired shells in an apparent artillery exercise near the disputed maritime border. Seoul too is conducting drills around the west coast.

The North’s deadly attack on the South’s Yeonpyeong island last month triggered the worst crisis between the neighbours for years. And with tensions still high new joint exercises between the United States and South Korea have been announced.

It follows talks in Seoul between leading South Korean officials and US Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Both countries want China to persuade its unpredictable ally North Korea to end its belligerent behaviour.
