The US, Japan and South Korea are appealing for Russian and Chinese help to defuse tensions on the Korean peninsula.
This after the Chinese President warned his American counterpart that the situation could “spin out of control”.
The US held talks with Japan and South Korea in Washington.
Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, said:
“We would hope that China would work with us to send a clear, unmistakable message to North Korea that they have to demonstrate a seriousness of purpose in ending their provocative actions.”
South Korea has begun another series of naval exercises despite warnings from the North, and the US and Japan are also holding large scale military exercises.
These latest drills are taking place to the west, east and south of the peninsula.
However, they are steering clear of the South Korean island which came under artillery fire from the North two weeks ago.
