L'Oreal mother and daughter bury the hatchet

Europe’s richest woman and her daughter have ended a three year feud that grew into a national scandal in France.

The French L’Oreal cosmetics heiress Liliane Bettencourt and Francoise Bettencourt-Meyers have dropped all legal proceedings.

Bettencourt-Meyers’ lawyer Olivier Metzner said: “The family will meet again and re-consolidate, from Francoise to Liliane and Jean-Pierre Meyers and the children – and of course they will continue to act as they always did by showing their complete commitment to the L’Oreal company.”

Once the affair began it seemed to take on a momentum of its own, with accusations emerging of illegal political funding, claims of embezzlement and tax evasion on a massive scale.

Bettencourt’s daughter had accused a photographer, Francois-Marie Banier, of abusing her mother’s alleged frailty and milking gifts from her worth a billion euros.
