France signs nuclear deal with India

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is wrapping up a successful four-day visit to India.

And he certainly has something to celebrate. France has agreed a multi-billion euro deal to supply India with two nuclear reactors.

It is good news for France, the world’s second biggest producer of nuclear energy after the US.

It is estimated India will need a further 20 nuclear reactors to meet its soaring energy demands.

As well as energy, defence is on the agenda.

Paris is in talks to upgrade Delhi’s fleet of Mirage fighter jets. India is also in the market to buy more.

Alongside her husband, the first lady of France is carrying out her own public duties.

An ambassador for the Global Fund, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy visited the HIV-AIDS wing of a local hospital to see for herself how the disease is being tackled.
