Eight dead in Italian cycling tragedy

It was supposed to be a pleasant Sunday morning outing for a group of Italian amateur cyclists.

But tragedy has struck on a country road in the south of the country. A car hit the group, killing eight of the riders and leaving two others fighting for their lives in hospital.

The incident happened near Lamezia Terme in Calabria.

Police allege the driver of the car, who suffered injuries, was over the speed limit while attempting to overtake. They say a blood test for drugs came back positive.

The man has been arrested and taken to hospital for treatment.
