China to tighten monetary policy

The Chinese government says it will swap to a “prudent” monetary policy from the existing “moderately loose” stance. That signals a rise in interest rates to curb inflation which is running at 4.4 percent. Even before Friday’s announcement, Beijing had already been getting banks to cut lending by requiring them to keep more cash in reserve.
