Russian leaders hail winning 2018 World Cup bid

It is mission accomplished for the Russian 2018 World Cup delegation and the country’s leaders are delighted.

“Hooray! Victory!” President Dmitry Medvedev said on Twitter, just minutes after Russia’s bid was declared the winner. As for Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, he jumped in a plane bound for Zurich, after speaking on Russian television.

“I would like to thank members of the FIFA Committee for their decision,” he said. “This decision is, no doubt, in keeping with FIFA’s philosophy which seeks to develop football across the world and especially in the regions which need it the most,” he said.
