Media report woman’s hanging in Iran

world news

| |

Iran has reportedly executed a woman sentenced to death for murdering her husband’s first wife.

A lawyer for Shalha Jahed said she was hanged at 5am local time at Tehran’s Evin prison.

Jahed confessed to the stabbing and then retracted it, but the confession was kept as evidence.

Amnesty International say she did not receive a fair trial and had asked for the sentence to be suspended.

It comes days after a woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery was told her case would be reveiwed. The plight of 43-year-old Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani drew an international outcry.

This latest execution, if confirmed, would be a defeat for human rights activists around the world who campaigned during the nine years of Shalha’s detention to stop Iran from carrying out the sentence.
