Medvedev warns of potential arms race

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has warned a new arms race could start in the next decade if Moscow is unable to reach a deal on missile defence with the West.

Speaking at his annual state of the nation address, Medvedev said: “I’d like to say that in next ten years we’ll have the following choice: either we will reach a deal on missile defence and will create a joint mechanism for collaboration, or, if we fail to reach such an agreement, a new arms race will start and we will have to install new (strategic) strike capability.”

Earlier this month, during talks in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, Russia and NATO agreed to cooperate further on Washington’s controversial missile defence shield.

However, Medvedev’s latest comments suggest Moscow is planning to prepare for all eventualities should a conclusive deal prove elusive.
