Ships were originally built from wood, metal then became the material of choice followed by fibreglass and various composites and even concrete but now a new boat building material is on the horizon. Scientists in Germany are experimenting with a metal sponge that could cut the weight of future ships by up to a third – that is 1,000 tons off an average sized freight vessel.
