‘Yes’ to information on medicines in the EU, ‘no’ to disguised advertising. The European Parliament has moved along proposed laws on prescription drugs saying patients have a right to accurate, unbiased information: pharmaceutical companies must provide basic product characteristics, labelling and package leaflets and make a drug’s assessment report accessible.

The EU already bans full-blown advertising of prescription medicines but there are loopholes to this.

The parliament said information on prescription drugs should be ruled out on television, radio and in print media, and that if health professionals give information on medicines at public events or in the media they must declare any links to pharmaceutical companies.

The draft will now receive EU member governments’ scrutiny.
