007 outguns Darth Vader at auction

It features in perhaps James Bond’s most famous pose… now the pistol Sean Connery used in the publicity shot for the 1963 film “From Russia with Love” has been auctioned for around 15 times its pre-sale estimate.

The price range that auctioneers at Christie’s in London had expected was similar to the amount the gun fetched when it last went under the hammer nine years ago: £14,100 (16,670 euros). It was not to be.

In the end an unidentified phone bidder paid £227,250 (327,850 euros).

007’s rating is clearly higher than Darth Vader’s. The original costume thought to have been made for the second Star Wars movie “The Empire Strikes Back” failed to sell.

The cape and mask had been expected to go for around 200,000 euros. No bidder offered the reserve price of just under 180,000, so the item was withdrawn from sale.
