Fury in Kiev over tax changes

Ukrainians furious at government plans to increase taxes on small and medium-sized businesses have gathered in Kiev to denounce the decision.

Critics claim the new tax code will leave wealthy enterprises untouched.

The bill was passed last week but President Viktor Yanukovitch has yet to sign it into law, claiming his administration is ready for “constructive dialogue.”

Yevgen Shapovalenko organised the protest:

“Our first demand is to veto the tax code. The second is to show the authors the injustice. They are responsible for the unrest in Ukraine. Thirdly, we want to change the law on pensions.”

Many believe the new law will create yet more tax evasion and further fuel corruption in an economy that contracted 15 per cent last year.
