The Ukrainian parliament might not have descended into the egg-pelting chaos it witnessed earlier this year, but to say its politicians got hot under the collar would be an understatement.
The heated scuffles between Ukraine’s opposition and ruling MPs took place over the government’s planned tax reforms.
Outside, around 2,000 small business owners gathered to protest against the proposed changes.
‘‘We agree about paying tax but we want the rich taxed and they don’t want that. They want us to do it and that is not fair. It seems like all politicians are liars,’‘ one woman said.
Despite that public anger, Ukraine’s government is under pressure from its creditors like the International Monetary Fund to reform its notoriously inefficient tax system, which is ranked third worst in the world.
