Concerns are growing in the US over the installation of the next generation of airport body scanners.
Some passengers are so worried over the invasive nature of the resulting images they are dubbing the machines “naked” body scanners.
One woman said it was embarrassing to stand in front of loads of people. “It was like getting groped,” she added.
Others are worried the images may be kept and even show up on the internet at some point.
At a Senate hearing in Washington Transport officials were put on the spot.
John Pistole admitted he did understand the sensitivities of people but refused to change security policies as terrorists still intended to kill people in the air.
With security remaining paramount fears that the x-ray dosage emitted by the scanners could cause skin cancer have been dismissed, although some scientists are calling for more research.
