Lisbon prepares security ring for Nato summit

Security is the watchword across Europe at the moment and no-where more so it seems than Lisbon with Nato’s summit set to start on Friday.

The Portuguese capital is staging what is being described as the largest security operation in the country’s history in an effort to prevent a repeat of violent anti-alliance protests that marred last year’s historic summit in Strasbourg.

This gathering will launch a new so-called “strategic concept”, set a date for Afghan forces to run their own affairs and seek to mend ties with Russia.

Severe traffic restrictions will be in place during the whole weekend, public sector workers are being sent home early and many business are expected to shut up shop.
