The death toll from the cholera outbreak in Haiti continues to rise as NGOs struggle to prevent a full blown epidemic.

At least 917 people have died so far, according to the country’s health ministry. Cholera is present in six out of 10 provinces and nearly 15,000 people have been hospitalised so far.

The border with the Dominican Republic has been closed to Haitians, although people from the Dominican Republic are still allowed to cross.

The UN has appealed for $164 million to fight the disease amid forecasts that 200,000 people could contract it.
