Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is gearing up for a final showdown with bitter rival Gianfranco Fini which analysts say could see the collapse of the Italian government within weeks.
Berlusconi’s political enemies say they will call for a vote of confidence in the lower chamber of parliament. Berlusconi says he will call for one in the upper house.
Speaking on the telephone, Berlusconi announced that if he only loses the vote in the lower house, he would only call elections for the lower house, retaining control of the Senate with no further vote.
Meanwhile, Fini declared that unless Berlusconi resigned, he would withdraw four ministers from the lower chamber.
