TAK claims responsibility for Istanbul bombing

The Kurdistan Freedom Hawks have released a statement on their website claiming responsibility for the suicide bombing in Istanbul last week. The group called TAK is linked to the Kurdistan Workers Party or PKK, who are better known for their armed struggle for a separate Kurdish state.

Sunday’s attack wounded 32 people in Taksim Square. The bomb went off near a police bus, and 15 of the injured were police officers.

On Tuesday, Turkish authorities named the suicide bomber, saying he came from a mainly Kurdish province and trained at a PKK camp in Northern Iraq.

TAK’s attack has been condemned by the PKK. The bombing happened on the same day that PKK renewed a temporary ceasefire and promised to no longer target civilians.
