US President Barack Obama has urged Democrats to get out and vote or risk seeing his agenda derailed. After two years in office Obama is in trouble and his party faces defeat in next week’s midterm elections. But he is fighting hard:
“Imagine that the economy is a car. The Republicans drove it into a ditch, we had to go in and we put our boots on, us Democrats, we started pushing and shoving on that car. Finally
we have this car pointing in the right direction. And suddenly, we feel this tap on our shoulders. We look back and, and behold, who is it? It’s the Republicans. And they said, ‘excuse me, can we have the keys back?’. We’ve got to say, ‘no, you can’t have the keys back, you don’t know how to drive,’‘ he said.
Former Republican vice-presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, also used the car analogy to put across the Republican message.
“The truth is, with Obama, Pelosi, and Reid at the wheel, the nation’s car isn’t really just stuck in a ditch. No, it’s still moving forward. And we’re getting closer and closer to a cliff,” she said.
As those in the hunt for votes continue to campaign the “Restore Sanity” rally, brainchild of comedians Jon Stewert and Stephan Colbert, went ahead in Washington.
The event was organised as an antidote to the partisan fervour that has marked recent politics in the United States.
