There have been plenty of ugly scenes during Barack Obama’s bitter fight to retain control of the US Congress, but the US president has rarely had to face down cat-calls from his own supporters.

Obama’s speech to a midterm election rally in New England was interrupted for several minutes by a students from a global AIDS pressure group.

The protestors were eventually shouted down and escorted out of the arena but not before Obama delivered his own riposte.
