Ivory Coast presidential poll too close to call

The people of Ivory Coast go to the polls today to elect a president in a contest that has been widely billed as the best chance of restoring peace to the world’s top cocoa grower.

The race pitting President Laurent Gbagbo against 13 other challengers is likely to be close and foreign powers have pressed all sides to accept the declared result and put an end to the West African nation’s protracted crisis.

The outcome could also be historic as Jacqueline Obie is the first and only female candidate to stand.

The lawyer and former justice minister is predicted to come fourth.
