Argentina’s Cristina Fernandez has shared her grief with a nation. As mourners cried slogans of support at the presidential palace, accompanying the end of Nestor Kirchner’s lying in state, his wife and successor as president was there by his side.
Since Kirchner’s sudden death of a heart attack on Wednesday, aged just 60, Argentina has been in shock, with an outpouring of grief.
Tens of thousands lined the streets of Buenos Aires as their late leader’s body made its way through the city.
President from 2003 to 2007, Kirchner’s remains were heading to the airport to be flown for burial in his native Patagonia.
As a little known governor there, he rose to lead his nation. It was thought he might have run for the presidency again next year, with Cristina Fernandez stepping aside for her husband and closest adviser.
