Protesters delay opening of Rome film festival

Glitz and glamour were nowhere to be seen.

The usual stars of the red carpet were missing as the Rome film festival got underway.

Stealing the show and invading the VIP walkway were hundreds of angry workers from the cinema industry. In protest at the Italian government’s drastic cuts to funds for cultural events, their demonstration delayed the opening ceremony by nearly two hours.

Only the jury took to the red carpet, in the middle of the uninvited guests, expressing solidarity with their movement. As did Keira Knightley, Eva Mendes and other headliners in the opening film ‘Last Night’, although they entered through a side door.

Knightley and Mendes face off as two rival beauties in the movie about a married couple grappling with the temptations of infidelity.
