The death of one of Argentina’s most powerful and influential former presidents, Nestor Kirchner has triggered an out pouring of grief among many of his people.
Thousands of them gathered during the night in Buenos Aires’s famous Plaza de Mayo to lay tributes and say prayers.
Sixty year old Kirchner died in hospital after being taken ill at his weekend home in the southern tourist city of El Calafate. He’d had a history of heart problems.
His death is all the more poignant as his widow is the current president, Cristina Fernandez.
She was elected in 2007 but her husband is said to have kept a firm hold on the reins of power .
His passing now throws into the doubt the government’s strategy for next year’s presidential election when it had been assumed Kirchner would have stood.
