Indonesian tsunami kills 40, hundreds missing

A tsunami that hit remote islands in western Indonesia after an earthquake has killed at least 40 people. Hundreds more are missing.

Villages were swept away by freak waves that followed Monday’s 7.5 magnitude quake off the coast of Sumatra.

At least 380 people are unaccounted for. Among them is a group of up to 10 Australians whose surfers’ tourist boat has been out of radio contact.

The latest such tragedy comes six years after the deadliest tsunami on record caused by a 9.1 magnitude quake off Sumatra. That killed around a quarter of a million people.
