Protests against the opening of new dump to ease the rubbish crisis in Naples have turned violent.
Demonstrators set refuse trucks alight, threw fireworks and pelted police with stones. A number of officers were injured in the violence.
Public anger has resurfaced after plans to open a new waste facility in the Vesuvio National Park, close to the town of Terzingo were announced.
Naples has long been the victim of waste mismanagement due to the involvement of organised crime, which has led to garbage strewn streets and illegal dumping.
Residents are concerned that unregulated and toxic waste may be dumped in their town if the crime syndicates continue to exert an influence in the business of rubbish.
Local politicians claim that the illegal practices of the past are at an end.
