US president Barack Obama has focused his attention on America’s female vote ahead of next month’s key congressional elections.
Obama was in Seattle on the West coast to back candidates seen as crucial if the Democrats are to keep control of the senate.
At a backyard event in the city, he told female supporters that women were vital to the country’s economy.
‘‘Our economy works only when everybody is participating and that means that things like equal pay for equal work aren’t just women’s issues. Those are middle class family issues because how well women do determines how well our families are doing as a whole,’‘ Obama said.
Women generally vote in higher numbers for the Democrats, but Obama faces a tough challenge from the Republicans and right-wing Tea Party movement.
Polls show an erosion in support for the Democrats in the key states of Washington and California ahead of the November 2 vote.
